And you thought that vegetables were only good for the body. Well think again. I just saw a program about this couple in California who are burning vegetable oil in their car. The man said that around 1902 in the Paris science fair, an engineer introduced a diesel engine which worked on peanut oil. Soon after some oil company bought the patent from him and buried it. So this guy in California (he is a gear head) had a diesel engine on hand which he was going to rebuild anyway so he decided to try it. His wife did not have peanut oil so he used some other vegetable oil and it worked great. The web site is "www.vegpoweredsystems.com". He said that the engine needs no modification to burn veg oil. The only thing he does is a new fuel system since due to the viscosity of the oil, it needs to be heated first which is done using the heat form the engine colling system. By the way the oil he used is the spent oil from deep frying done in restaurants (so the oil is used twice). I thought this was really interesting.

Yes it is old news. After all the first person supposedly showed this around 1902. But anyway, I didn't know that the veg oil could be just burned in a diesel engine unmodified. As for how many miles per gallon, it is about the same as the diesel fuel. Now one side effect of this is that, the owner reported that the smell coming from the exhaust is the smell of food (sushi in this case, since the oil he uses comes from a Japanese sushi restaurant) which is better than the regular gas smell.
